Some rough drawings

I plan to start showing more and more of my process to the way I work; Having been trained in Animation at a really young age, I have a tendency to try to find the right poses for my characters even if it takes  many tries. I have lots and lots of roughs and pose/design ideas kind of all over the place.. I really enjoy working rough and fast and although my style has a more tied-down quality I am always trying to find places to have this sort of energy exist in my work.

Here are some roughs for a painting idea I’m working on, if it doesn’t get painted it will get thrown in a large pile of story ideas which aren’t as separated as much as combined into a much larger pot of ideas which is always brewing..

Luminous World progress pic

“Luminous World” went down last week in Chinatown La.. Everything was excellent and I want to thank Beau, Christine and Kim at Lebasse Projects, Everyone should stop by there if they can -they have an amazing program set up.

Here’s a studio photo after I finished ‘Luminous World’ the title piece for the show.   I will put up a step by step of this painting in the near future.

The Lantern Begins

One aspect of my November Show in La will be this lantern on a hill which is part of an amazing collaboration between two great friends, Karl Zahn and Yoshi Takao of Bunny Bunny Hole Studio.

Here’s a photo of the scale model of the lantern that I built for Karl to begin building -It’s taken from my studio. I’m very excited about this project. This show is a lot about light -Light from sources such as lanterns, early morning light, hazy soft light. I’m intending to break out of some habits I’ve been doing for many years now, while maintaining what people have come to expect from my paintings in the past..

“Victory March”

It’s been really hot and nearly impossible to get any painting done this summer. Also add in that the beach is especially seductive this time of year and you’ll do anything not to stay at home.

Alas, I have a show in November coming up.. Also I’m SUPER PYCHED on some new painting ideas right now.  So i’ve been braving the indoor heat and plugging away. . .

Here is a recent work in progress! (A lot more as soon as I make them!)

A Kings Daughter

I just posted on my Etsy page a rare painting that has never been exhibited by itself, The King’s Daughter (2nd). It was a painting I made in-between shows in 2008; part of a 3 piece work called the Kings Daughters, exhibited at BLDG in summer 2010. Really a lovely piece, 12 x 24″ unframed.

See it here:

Some process for my new painting “Looking Inside”

I thought I might upload a little process post so, people can see a bit more of what goes into each piece.  I had to rush this painting out in about 4-5 days for a show deadline, so I had to work pretty efficiently. It was alright though, as I had already done the color study and had been looking forward to painting this one for awhile!

Step 1.

This is taken at about the 5th step of my process. I’ve already done the color study, cleaned up the drawing and char designs, laid down the background color, transferred the drawing and done the very light bg elements as well as started the foreground elements. Maybe I’ll get into those earlier steps in a later post : )

Step.2

Here I’ve started adding the globe shapes within the world which are floating up and around our main characters as they are ‘looking inside’ this strange valley..

Step 3.

In this detail shot you can see the introduction of the characters. I changed the character on the left with the lantern a bit in the end.  The girl in the red dress who is the one ‘outside of her element’ in this painting is just beginning to take shape, also you can see her design taped next to her that I traced and am working from.

Step. 4

This is how the final painting turned out. I finished out details in the very foreground flowers, the vines on the tree, our red-dressed heroine and some yellow light rays in the upper right.  I feel like I employed a slightly different style with this one.. Also, expect a lot more round pieces in the near future, as it’s something I’m pretty excited about as well!

A Moment in Time

Been finishing up some very time-consuming projects lately and getting back in the groove with paint. Here’s a little piece to come out of the factory recently..

I’ll be posting it to my Etsy page soon along with a few things from the vault. Check it out here.. http://www.etsy.com/shop/sleepingthief

A Moment to Practice

The New Mother

I was recently contacted by the Design firm IDEO to create a series of illustrations for the Baby wing of NYU hospital. They wanted to promote the Mother Baby experience within the hospital and bring some of the magic back into the experience.

In my vision, the animals represent the nursing and doctor staff and they lead the main characters through 5 important steps of the birthing journey. I really enjoyed working with IDEO -they were fully professional, supportive and fun!  I hope to do more illustration soon.. These are all done digitally which is pretty necessary for this type of project with lots of changes and it’s where I’ve been wanting to take my work for awhile now.

Here they are..Remember to click on the images so you can see them ‘un-squashed’
